I was assigned to observe Grade 7 and Grade 8, specifically with the subjects Science and English.

Teaching Methods of the Teacher That You Observed

I've often notice that the teachers' methods are quite student-centered. Once a student finishes their task, they're allowed to have recreational activities on their desk as long as it's not disturbing to their other classmates.  They're usually start the class with a prayer (I love the fact that despite the difference in religions, they manage to have a silent moment for individual prayers), then they'd have an energizer for the whole class, and present the objectives of the lesson.

Their Learning Materials and Innovation

Most of the teachers really make use of the projector and screen. What fascinated me the most that the projector itself has a marker with a sensor on it. Every time the teacher would write something on the white board, the writings and symbols could be saved on the PowerPoint presentation itself.

Some teachers would opt for ever more interactive learning materials: puzzles, dioramas, and many more. Some activities in class involve games where the teachers themselves play along with the student. It is both interactive and educational. This also instills a reward system to the students', giving them a healthy competitive environment.

Sources of Learning and Technology Used by the Teachers

SHP has prescribed books and workbooks for every subject, and the entirety of this is frequently used. As much as possible, the books provided have to be used by the learners. However, teachers may opt to add more information and references if they wish to, as long as the book is utilized along with it.

For the Secondary Level, I used the Science Ahead International Lower Secondary Student Book by Ho Peck Leng.

​

The content of the lessons and activities were taken from this prescribed book.

Authentic Assessment Used by the Teachers

Since we arrived mid school year in SHP, we've only witnessed a lot of Formative Assessments conducted by the teachers. They mostly had Assessment of Learning activities, which includes their exams, portfolios, and final projects.

For Grade 7, they were tasked to make a scale model of either a Plant Cell or an Animal Cell. The materials they used are clay, toothpicks, paper, and pens. 

​

As for the Review Week, we mostly focused on the concepts and fundamentals around Unit I and Unit II of their syllabus. For their Midterms, I was mostly observing with P3 and P4.
